Chief Executive, EEF Yorkshire and Humberside

Born in Staffordshire and educated in the Midlands, Alan moved to York in 1971 to join Shepherd Building Group. In his subsequent career with the Group, he was appointed to numerous senior positions including MD or Chief Executive of various subsidiaries including a period as Chairman & Chief Executive of the Construction businesses and MD of Portakabin Ltd. He was closely involved in Group acquisitions and disposals.

Alan was a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a Chartered Electrical Engineer although his later career has been in managing businesses rather than in engineering technology.

Alongside his business career, Alan was also involved in the reserve forces and retired some time ago with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He has also been involved at a National level with EEF advising on strategic issues for the organisation and how best they can serve the interests of member companies.

Having been involved during his career in export business to various parts of the world, Alan served on the UK Trade & Investment Engineering Sector Advisory Group for some time.

Following his retirement from Shepherds, he joined EEF Yorkshire and Humberside on a part-time basis as Chief Executive to assist in strategic change which is still on-going. He has also been involved at the time with various private equity activities as an adviser, largely related to SMEs.
