Professor David J Drewry is Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hull, since 1999. He was educated at the University of London (Queen Mary College) and University of Cambridge (Emmanuel College) where he was awarded his PhD in Glaciology/Geophysics. He has research interests in glaciology, climate change and science policy having published three books and more than 90 research papers. He has participated in and led a number of scientific expeditions to Greenland, Svalbard and Antarctica. He was a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, President of the International Arctic Science Committee and served on the Executive Board of the European Science Foundation.
He was previously Director-General of The British Council (1998-99); Director of Science & Technology (Deputy Chief Executive) at the Natural Environment Research Council (1994-98), Director of the British Antarctic Survey (1987-94) and Director of the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge (1983-87). He is Visiting Professor in the University of London and Xiamen University, China, and was Visiting Fellow at Green College, University of Oxford and Visiting Scientist at the US Geological Survey, Denver.
He holds the Polar Medal, the US Antarctic Service Medal, Honorary Degrees from several British Universities and is recipient of the Prix de la Belgica of the Royal Academy of Belgium and the Patron’s Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society. He is a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute.
