Aiming to help secure a slice of EU research funding, Yorkshire Forward has become the first Regional Development Agency (RDA) in the country to establish a key presence in Brussels. As Yorkshire Forward's resident EU representative, Reza Zadeh will be responsible for helping the region's businesses make the most of the £50 billion funding available next year for European research. The move reflects a major shift in the approach to EU funding.

Reza, Yorkshire Forward's Director of European Innovation said: "In the past we waited for structural funds to come to us. That approach isn't going to work in the future - we need to be much more focused on the benefits of science, technology and innovation. Yorkshire has built up a great reputation for research - we need to ensure that we maintain this reputation and that our firms and universities are best placed to put forward projects that will qualify for this research funding."

The RDA believes that in the future it should compete by building on its successes - particularly in high-end science and technology - and not by trying to access grants to mitigate against the consequences of economic failure.
